Thyroid Disorders

Your thyroid is an important gland in your body that affects your body’s metabolism. It is a butterfly shaped gland located in the lower front of the neck. Some of the most common thyroid disorders include hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto’s disease, Graves’ disease and Goiter.
Hyperthyroidism: This is an overactive thyroid condition that occurs when the thyroid gland overproduces the thyroid hormone in the body.Treatment for this disorder depends upon your age, what type of hyperthyroidism you have, the severity of it, other medical conditions you may have and your preference for treatment. There are certain treatments that can be used such as antithyroid drugs, beta blockers, radioactive iodine and surgery.
Hashimoto’s Disease: Hashimoto’s disease is as an autoimmune disease that attacks the thyroid gland in particular. Also known as chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis or autoimmune thyroiditis, this causes the thyroid to become inflamed which interferes with proper thyroid hormone functions to be impaired. This disease does not have a cure however it can be managed through the use of pills to regulate hormone levels and metabolism.
Graves’ Disease:Antibodies in the body work against the thyroid gland secrete too much of the thyroid hormone into the blood. This is the one of the most common causes of hyperthyroidism that occurs in young women more often than not. Antithyroid Medications, Radioactive Iodine (RAI) and surgery are treatments for this disease.
Goiter: Abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland. A goiter indicates that there is a condition whether it is hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism or euthyroidism that is causing the thyroid to grow abnormally. Depending on the size of the goiter if it is small enough a doctor will monitor it. If it causes more prominent issues with your thyroid, medication may be prescribed, surgery may be necessary or radioactive iodine may be used.

Parathyroid Disorders

The parathyroid gland is located behind the thyroid in the back of the neck. This gland helps regulate the amount of calcium that is produced in your body. When there is too much calcium being released into the body at once the glands will secrete a parathyroid hormone (PTH) to regulate it.

Hyperparathyroidism occurs when your parathyroid gland is overactive or produces too much PTH that cause the calcium levels in your blood to increase. Small tumors develop in the parathyroid when this occurs.

Low Vitamin D levels can also produce parathyroid tumors. If you are suffering from hyperparathyroidism surgery is the best option to control the amount of PTH in your body as well as your parathyroid glands.
