Facial Fractures

Facial fractures are broken bones anywhere on the face and can involve any combination of bones in the lower or upper jaw, palate, nose, cheekbones, or eye socket. Facial fractures can occur as a result of athletic injuries, from falls, motor vehicle crashes, or from any other facial trauma. There are many different types of facial fractures including:


  • Nasal fractures
  • Orbital fractures
  • Maxillary Sinus fractures
  • Zygomatic fractures
  • Mandible fractures

Facial Trauma

Facial trauma is any sort of physical trauma to the face. Facial trauma can involve soft tissue injuries such as burns, lacerations, and bruises, or fractures of the facial bones. This type of trauma can be caused by motor vehicle accidents, falls, and sports injuries. Facial trauma should be assessed as soon as possible as it can cause severe bleeding or interference with the airway. Signs of facial trauma can include: 


  • Bruising around the eyes
  • Skin lacerations
  • Distance Between the eyes widening
  • Abnormal sensations on the cheeks
  • Movement of the upper jaw when the head is stabilized

Congenital Facial Deformities

Craniofacial anomalies are deformities that affect a child’s head and facial bones. These disorders are typically present at birth (congenital) and can range from mild to severe. There are several types of congenital facial deformities including:


  • Cleft palate and cleft lip
  • Craniosynostosis
  • Hemifacial microsomia 
  • Macrocephaly & microcephaly
  • Eye anomalies
